Autodesk® Inventor™ 2008 Family of Products

System Requirements

This page provides technical information and answers to some common questions about system requirements for effective use of the Autodesk® Inventor™ 2008 family of software products.

Recommended System Requirements

The following requirements are recommended for effective use of Inventor 2008 software for general part and assembly design (typically less than 1,000 parts):

  • Windows® 2000 Professional SP4
  • Windows® XP Professional SP2
  • Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition
  • Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD® Athlon™ or later, with 2 GHz or faster processor; or compatible
  • 1+ GB RAM
  • 128+ MB Direct3D 9 or OpenGL capable graphics card support
  • 3.5+ GB free hard disk space (for installation)
  • DVD ROM drive
  • MS-Mouse compliant pointing device
  • Internet connection for web downloads and Subscription Aware access
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP2 or later
  • Microsoft Excel 2000 or later for iComponents, thread customization, and spread sheet driven designs

For superior performance when working with complex models and large assemblies (typically over 1,000 parts), Autodesk recommends the following additional system requirements:

  • 3+ GB RAM
  • 3 GHz or faster processor
  • CAD workstation-capable graphics card (if using OpenGL)

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these requirements applicable for Inventor Professional 2008?

Yes, the requirements listed above apply to the entire family of Inventor 2008 products: Inventor, Inventor Simulation, Inventor Routed Systems, and Inventor Professional.

How will Inventor 2008 support the new Microsoft® Windows Vista™ operating system?

Inventor 2008 will install and run on Windows Vista, but is not yet officially supported. Autodesk invite customers to install Inventor 2008 on Windows Vista and provide feedback via the Autodesk MyFeedback Portal . Autodesk will leverage this customer feedback to provide a high quality, high performance Windows Vista implementation in the future. All Inventor data created on the Vista operating system is compatible with XP data and future Vista supported versions of Inventor.

The quality and performance of Inventor 2008 on Windows Vista will in many ways exceed that of Autodesks competitors’ so called supported versions. This is due to the performance advantages we gain from well-established support of Microsoft DirectX graphics technology.

Since our quality standards are high, Autodesk believe customer validation of Inventor 2008 on Windows Vista will result in a meaningful declaration of official support and a high quality, high performance experience for Autodesk customers.

To provide feedback and learn more, customers with Inventor 2008 and Windows Vista can visit http://myfeedback.autodesk.com and create or edit their user profile to include INVVISTA in the Beta Code field.

Please consult www.autodesk.com\support for future updates on Windows Vista support.

Will Inventor 2008 work as a 32bit application on a 64-bit computer?

Yes, Inventor 2008 is a 32-bit application and installing Inventor 2008 on a 64-bit computer allows access to 4GB of addressable memory. When using Inventor 2008 on a 64-bit operating system, certain functionality dependent on AutoCAD and MDT such as preview images of DWG import, Inventor Link (associativity with AutoCAD Mechanical), and Mechanical Desktop 2008 file translation are not supported.

Is Inventor 2008 available as a native 64-bit application?

No, Inventor 2008 is a native 32-bit application. Autodesk are committed to delivering an optimized, native 64-bit Inventor application in a future release. To facilitate a great customer experience, Autodesk will leverage customer validation though our Beta program resulting in a high quality, high performance 64-bit application.

Will Inventor 2008 work on a computer with a multi-core processor?

Yes, Inventor 2008 is fully supported to install and run on a multi-core processor.

How much RAM is enough?

RAM is one of the most important determinants of system performance and capacity while working with Inventor. Autodesk recommends at least 1 GB of RAM, but a good guideline is to get as much RAM as you can reasonably afford, up to 4 GB.

Autodesk also recommends settings which allow Microsoft Windows to manage virtual memory as needed, and there should always be at least twice as much free hard disk space as system memory (RAM).

Do I need special hardware or software to use Autodesk Vault and/or Content Center?

If you are a standalone Inventor user who needs to store and access Vault and/or Content Center data on the same computer, you do not need any additional hardware or software.

Although not required, you may choose to use Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) for improved performance of Content Center.

If you are a member of a multi-user team who needs to access Inventor data stored on a remote server network, you do not need any additional hardware or software.

Additional requirements and options exist for remote server installations. Please see the Autodesk Data Management system requirements or contact your reseller for more information.

Microsoft doesn’t support Windows 2000 Professional anymore, how much longer will Inventor?

Inventor 2008 is the last release for which Windows 2000 Professional will be a supported operating system.

How can I learn more about graphics card support for Inventor 2008?

Inventor 2008 supports Direct3D 9 and OpenGL graphics cards. Direct3D 9 is the default graphics technology; however you can switch to OpenGL as needed. Please refer to the Autodesk published graphics card site for more information:

http://support.autodesk.com/inventor-graphic-cards/GraphicsCardsGeneral.htm

Can I use Inventor of one language on a computer of another?

Inventor, AutoCAD Mechanical, and/or Autodesk Vault software applications must all be the same language on a given computer. English versions of these applications will run on any language operating system. Localised versions of these applications will run on operating systems of that same language.

Does Inventor 2008 come on CD or DVD media?

Inventor 2008 software is shipped on DVD media by default. CD media is available by request for some languages, including English. Inventor 2008 is the last release for which CDs will be available. Future releases will be available on DVD only.

What are the minimum system requirements for Inventor 2008?

Less-capable machines can run Inventor 2008, but the results may be less than ideal. The use of additional memory and faster processors directly improves performance and capacity and is strongly recommended. For educational purposes or small assembly design, minimum system requirements include Intel® Celeron® or AMD® Sempron™ (or better) with 512MB RAM and 1.5 GB available hard disk space. Installation of the Content Center requires an additional 1.8 GB of hard disk space and can be installed on a local workstation or centralized on a server location for access by multiple users.
