Revit 2012 is here
Revit 2012 has hit the shelves and should be on your desk already. Subscription customers can alternatively download the 2012 upgrade here.
There are so many new features and tweaks to existing features so I’ll just touch on a few I really like.

A neat tool - which I spent hours playing with - is the ability to split systems families into parts and edit each part separately. This means a wall, for example, can be divided into its layers. The layers can then be divided into panels and the panels can then be scheduled individually.

My other favourite new tool is the Assembly tool. This allows you to ‘group’ elements together – for example a column and the reinforcing. You can then create shop drawings – which are independent of the model, to send to the manufacturer.
Speaking about reinforcing – there are numerous upgrades to the reinforcing options. You have new rebar shapes, multi-planar reinforcing and display improvements amongst others. The one that brought the biggest smile to my face is the capacity to add reinforcing to generic model families. It means the quandary of precast panel creation becomes a thing of the past.

Revit Server was available through the Subscription Advantage packs for 2011. It now comes standard with Revit. A technology that allows you to link Architecture, Structure and MEP models on a server and work on them simultaneously from opposite ends of the world.
Point cloud support, DWG export improvements, Autodesk Vault integration, Linking improvements, Visualisation improvements and many other bits and pieces. I think Revit users will be very happy with this Upgrade.
The CADPRO team will be out and about showing off the new features in the next few weeks.

For the 2012 range of software Autodesk is offering more Suite options for the construction industry.
In a comprehensive software solution, the Autodesk Building Design Suite offers all the CAD and BIM tools you need in one purchase. The Standard version of the suite combines AutoCAD and the AutoCAD products designed for building designers, drafters and detailers. The Advanced version includes the AutoCAD products, and adds Revit options for architects and engineers. The Ultimate version adds tools to the Premium version so it is suited to construction professionals.
