Patton Engineering

Expanded capability – more accuracy, less disruption

Hawke’s Bay firm Patton Engineering is all about structural steel fabrication and erection, along with mechanical maintenance. They serve a variety of medium to large businesses, with fabrication and machining workshops and their mobile resources for on-site work in locations as far as Wellington, Gisborne and South Auckland.

They offer a full service, from design for both mechanical and structural engineering through to procurement and installation. Patton has used Autodesk solutions extensively, and over recent years, expanded capabilities within the Building Information Modelling (BIM) environment to deliver bespoke solutions for complex project issues.

That capability made them the perfect supplier when Hawke’s Bay Hospital needed to undergo seismic strengthening to bring the building up to code.

Patton Engineering Limited focus mainly on structural steel fabrication and erection, as well as mechanical maintenance projects for a variety of medium to large Hawke’s Bay businesses. The latter utilises not only fabrication and machining workshops but also significant mobile resources for on-site works.

The challenge

On the surface, seismic strengthening seems simple – place some steel beams and you’re done. The reality is, projects can be extremely complex, with Patton needing to accurately capture every detail of the as-built environment before even beginning to design the structural solutions.

Accurate measurements are critical – they mean any solutions won’t interfere with existing services and let Patton give clients options and accurate costing for any workarounds that are needed.

The measurements and drawings are extremely complex and detailed. The traditional measuring methods added time and the chance of errors, says Mark Wharekawa, Patton’s engineering programme manager.

“It’s just cumbersome – you’re having to go in and pull out your tape measure, put up scaffolding and other access equipment, just to measure up. And then you often have to go back and try to capture things you miss.”

Patton also needed to factor in the normal operations of the busy hospital, which measuring would disrupt.

Combined with new 3D scanning technology, Autodesk offered a solution to all those issues.

Reducing measuring time by 60%

“CADPRO assisted in delivering the Autodesk software required to use the 3D scanning data. It incorporates into our business and it’s far superior to anything else that’s out there. We’ve saved 60% of time on-site, which is a huge benefit. That saves on costs, and we’ve also kept disruption of the hospital to a minimum.”

“It means you get a lot less surprised and grumpy clients – they can see exactly what’s going to be in there. For the construction crew, it’s also critical – they can use it to identify where the services are and what needs to be demolished for our steel to go into. We could also share the designs with other stakeholders – it gives them a great picture of what’s going on.”

Architecture, Engineering & Construction CollectionThe Autodesk AEC Collection gives you access to a set of integrated tools that equip you to meet any project challenge – now and in the future. Use powerful BIM and CAD workflows enabled by a comprehensive set of software and services to deliver your best work and stay competitive.

The solution

Patton traded measuring tapes and scaffolding for Autodesk products and 3D scanning technology. These let them scan each room, capturing the environment with far more accuracy and in a fraction of the time. That data could then be manipulated with a range of Autodesk products including Revit, Recap, Advance Steel, Navisworks and A360, to create a real-world environment for the design modelling.

“CADPRO and Autodesk definitely help in the 3D scanning. It incorporates into our business – it’s far superior to anything else that’s out there.”

This enabled Patton to deliver a service to clients that is unmatched in the industry – both in the design phase and throughout the project.
